I’m slowly transitioning to using the scooter as my dd. I’ve gotten a bit better at starting it in sub-freezing temps, which helps considerably. I rode to the gym this afternoon in the pouring rain, and despite my legs getting soaked... It was a blast!
Anyhoo... I ’m a hiker that actually p refers the winter season, so I’m no stranger to cold.
However, ri ding in 35°F at 40mph feels significantly colder than hiking in 5°. I’ve been riding with a waterproof jacket on top of various warm layers, with the hood on under the helmet. That helps quite a bit, as does tucking my cuffs into my gloves. Still, even with the Kevlar-lined riding pants that are too hot to hike in when temps are over 30 °F, the fairly thick leather riding boots, and all the layers on top, i t’s cold. Really cold. Especially once you throw freeway stints in.
Any gear you’ve fallen in love with for dealing with the chill?
On the flip side, any good wet-weather gear recommendations? I’m thinking just some cheap rain pants. Frog togs?
A motorcycle jacket is the one necessity I’m currently missing, and I’m unsure if I should spend big bucks on something waterproof, or just buy whatever is safe and toss an old, lightweight rain jacket over the top.

Heated gloves are the shit. Heated grips are a close second.

I may or may not have spent way too long building out a 2020 Monster 1200S w ith heated grips right after a 30° ride.
Because that would definitely be the smartest way to solve my current problems with the cold, right?

My experience with frog togs is that they are garbage. The biggest thing that will get you soaked is the spray from all the cars driving. A budget friendly option that is effective is something like these heavy duty plastic items from Carhartt.
That mist will find it’s way into every possible nook and cranny. I’ve had bad experiences with any “breathable” waterproof layer.

Heated vest. I used one in Texas and rode in freezing weather when I was at University.

These are the gloves I used. They were ok, not great. The vest is mega.

Stella electrical system can handle that?

Re: Cold
I just dress up like I'm going sledding. Thicc coat, thicc gloves, etc. They work ok for rain and snow, so long as it isn't heavy precipitation.

Exactly. No way the Stella generator can handle the extra draw at idle.
For real though. Winter gloves make a huge difference along with thermal base layers. Something around your neck is also fantastic. The leg shield is massive benefit for you in this situation.

hoodies make any jacket into a cold weather jacket. Also, double up on socks, underwear, and consider wearing shorts under your pants to help with holding in heat. My armor pants are really breezy so the shorts help. Jeans are a touch warmer, but still need the extra warmth.
But I ride a kawasaki KLR so I am the official cheap-ass of the 2-wheel community.

How about just bringing another pair of pants to change into at work?

Olympia jacket. Ballistic protection elbows, back, zip in liners: Rain/ cold. T he best thing? If you aren’t wearing the whole rig? Keep a cheap plastic parka in you helmet liner [with your docs]. No-one plans to ride in the rain, but if you have to, the cheap plastic parka will keep everything but your neck dry, and they cost what...3 dollars? I rode from deep Brooklyn to M anhattan and over the Br Bridge in a monsoon and only my chest, neck and shins were wet. Heated gloves...I just returned a pari that didn’t work. Don’t patch into Stella’s electrics. That is the weakpoint of LPL. Ghosts of Lucas.

Get some windproof mittens and a windproof balaclava. That’s all I ever wore in the cold. You could also pick up some cheap windpants which will make a huge difference too.

I love the way you problem solve, but the monster isn't wonderful for cold and wet because you have nothing to keep the wind off of you and because of seating position water can drip down your arms into your gloves. It's a wonderful bike, but it's a lesson in perseverance for stuff like this.

So what you’re saying i s I need a monster *and* an adventure bike?
That 1200 I kept taking out for test rides last summer sure did emit a lot of heat. Bet that would help keep oneself nice and toasty...

All the bikes!
Part of being a naked means it doesn't retain heat when it's cold out. You know how the redline moves depending on temp? 6k cold and 11k hot... Well at 40 and rainy at 60mph, it's 6k.

Wait... Is that a thing? Because no, I had no idea a redline moved based on temp.

It does on the monster. That way you don't redline it before oil is flowing properly and damage something.
